3.5: T-BONED BOXES

The terms Beau, Belle, Leader, and Trailer can be further generalized to the case of four-person boxes where there may be no actual couples or tandems. (Again this sort of usage is more common in Advanced and Challenge dancing.) Within such a box, dancers are labeled according to their position as if they were in a box consisting of couples and tandems.

Dancers whose right hands are toward the center of the box -- where they would be holding hands if they were part of an actual couple -- are considered to be Beaus. Similarly, dancers whose left hands are toward the center of the box are considered Belles.

Dancers who are facing out of the box are considered Leaders, and dancers who are facing into the box are considered Trailers, even if the dancer in the other spot that would be part of their tandem is facing in a perpendicular direction.

Note that this means that it is possible for everybody in the square to be a Beau. Similarly, everybody in the square could be a Leader.
