3.3: GENERALIZED COUPLES
While an ordinary "couple" consists of one Beau and one Belle, and an ordinary "tandem" consists of one Leader and one Trailer, these terms are also used in other situations when two dancers are adjacent. These usages are more common in Advanced and Challenge dancing.
The term "generalized couple" refers to two dancers who are standing side by side but not necessarily facing the same direction. In addition to ordinary couples, this includes left-handed and right-handed mini-waves. Since the dancer whose right hand is joined to form a couple is the Beau, in a right-handed mini-wave both dancers are Beaus.
In a left-handed mini-wave, both dancers are Belles.
