3.2: LEADERS AND TRAILERS

When one dancer is standing directly behind another, they are said to be "in tandem". Such situations arise in many different formations. For example, in parallel waves there are four tandems.

In a tandem, the dancer who is "in front" and "looking out of the tandem" is called the Leader. (Sometimes the term "Lead" is used instead of "Leader".) The dancer who is "behind" and "looking into the tandem" is called the Trailer.

"Leader" and "Trailer" only have meaning in relation to a particular tandem. If there are more than two dancers standing, single-file, in front of each other, there will be more than one way to group them into tandems of two. For example, in ordinary columns of four each Center forms a tandem with one of the Ends.

But the centers also form a tandem with each other. In that context, different dancers will be Leaders and Trailers.

Here are some more formations in which there are tandems and, therefore, Leaders and Trailers.
Note that not all dancers are necessarily Leaders or Trailers.
