1.4: SINGING CALLS

In a typical singing call, the girls "switch partners" four times. This affects some usages of the word Partner as well as couple identification.

After the call "Swing", the boy and girl who did the swinging action are considered to be each other's Partner. Most often, this will be followed by a Promenade Home, with the girl accompanying that boy to his home position. But even if the next call is something else, references to Partner and Corner will now be based on this new relationship. In particular, after swinging your Corner, that person is no longer your Corner -- because that person has become your Partner. Your Corner is now the next person around the square in the appropriate direction (clockwise if you are a Boy, counterclockwise if you are a Girl).

As the girls proceed from boy to boy, they take on the couple identity of that boy. In particular, in the middle of a singing call, a call like "Heads Square Thru 4" at the beginning of a new sequence means that the Head Boys and whichever Girls are their current partners (even if they started the tip as Side Girls) should do the Square Thru 4.
