The call Fan the Top is most frequently done from a wave. The end and center dancers drop hands with each other, and everybody walks forward around the center point of the wave. The end dancers walk 1/4 of a circle. Meanwhile the center two dancers, holding hands with each other, do a Cast Off 3/4, walking in a smaller circle.
Note that:
- The ends stay ends and the centers stay centers, and everybody ends up with the same person with whom they started.
- If they start facing head walls they end facing side walls, and if they start facing side walls they end facing head walls.
- Fan the Top is the same as the second part of Spin the Top. Or, looking at it the other way, a Spin the Top is an Arm Turn 1/2 followed by a Fan the Top.
Fan the Top can also be done from facing couples. In this case, the dancers first step to a wave -- then the centers of that wave turn 3/4 while the ends of that wave walk 1/4 of a circle around them.
