Regardless of how they start, the dancers from each half of the line end as a couple. If ends of the original line were facing in opposite directions, the resulting couples will be facing each other.
If the ends of the original line started facing in the same direction, then the resulting couples will be facing the same direction as each other. The end who was on the right "passes right shoulders" and the dancers from that half of the line become the couple standing in front.
