40: SOME ALMOST-SYNONYMSThere are some actions in square dancing that are very similar to each other, differing only in whether they are done "with hands". This makes them relatively easy to learn -- you can just think of them as variations of each other.Weave the Ring is just like Right and Left Grand except "without hands". The dancers first just walk past each other passing right shoulders (like a Pass Thru), then pass left shoulders with next person, then right shoulders again, then left shoulders again.
![]() Star Thru is like a Slide Thru but "with hands". It is only used when a boy is facing a girl. The boy lifts his right arm while the girl lifts her left arm, and they join hands loosely to form an arch. They both walk forward, and as they start to pass each other the girl "goes under the arch" to move to her destination. Meanwhile the boy keeps walking around the girl, ending up standing to her left. When they are done they lower their hands to the usual height.
![]() California Twirl is like a Partner Trade "with hands". It is only used from a "normal couple", one with the boy on the left and the girl on the right. They raise their hands (the boy's right hand and the girl's left hand) to form an arch while also turning toward each other. They they complete the action just like a Star Thru, passing each other with the girl going under the arch and both of them turning another 1/4.
