31: CIRCLES AND STARSWe previously saw how the eight dancers in a square can form and turn a Circle. From a circle, Ladies In Men Sashay means that the girls drop hands with the boys and temporarily step forward, allowing the boys to pass behind them as they continue their circling motion. Then the girls step backward again, so that the boys who had been their corners are now their partners.
![]() Dancers can also go around the center of the set in the form of a Star. Usually the caller will identify four dancers to form the star, and also indicate whether the star should be left-handed or right-handed. Those dancers move toward the center of the set and turn so that the named hand is in the center. As with Circle, making a Star implies turning it. So, on a Boys Star Left, the four boys put their left hands into the center, and walk around the center.
![]() On a Heads Star Right, the four heads put their right hands into the center, and walk around the center that way.
![]() There are also some situations where a star is used as part of doing some other action. Usually this is an action where somebody would normally be doing a Pull By, but a star is used when more than two dancers need to go across the center at the same time. For example, if the caller says "Four Ladies Chain", all the girls put their right hands into the center, forming a star, and turn that star halfway to get to the other side.
