16.1: BOX CIRCULATE

Another way of looking at this kind of Circulate is in terms of the specific actions done by the dancers who are looking out of the box (the Leaders) and the dancers who are facing into the box (the Trailers).

In the circulate path for a box, the next position for the trailers is directly ahead, and the circulate action for the trailers consists of walking straight forward, without turning. For the leaders, the next position is either to the right or to the left, and the dancer must "flip over" to get to that position. In a right-handed box, the leaders will flip to their right. Before they can move, the dancers must drop hands. They join hands again when they are done.

In a left-handed box, the leaders (the dancers who are facing out of the box) will be flipping over to their left. But in either case, every dancer will either be flipping over to face the opposite wall (180 degrees), or not turning at all.

The various forms of Circulate are often named according to the formation in which they are done. The example shown above is done in a box, and so it is referred to as a Box Circulate.
