12: OTHER ACTIONS IN A SQUARED SETMany of the actions that involve two dancers or four dancers can also be done from a squared set. For this purpose, the dancers who are facing each other across the square (e.g., the two head couples) act as if they were facing directly. So they can do things like Heads Slide Thru.
![]() In some cases, the dancers who are not doing the action may need to adjust their position by moving forward or back, to be spaced appropriately after the action is complete. For example, with a Heads Step to a Wave, the sides must step back a bit to allow room for the new wave.
![]() There is one more action that, although in principle it can be done by any facing couples, is in practice almost always done from a squared set (by either the heads or the sides). Lead Right means that each couple moves forward while turning, as a unit, 1/4 (90 degrees) to the right, sliding past each other so that the two couples end back to back. From a squared set, the result will be that the couples who did the Lead Right end up facing the couples who didn't. For example, after a Heads Lead Right, the head couples will be facing the side couples.
![]() Lead Left is the same, except that the couples turn to the left.
