During the three years of 1987 through 1989, the SCVCA collected "Frequency of Use" data from each Jubilee, as part of the process of maintaining the LISST teaching order. (Actually, the process started a number of years earlier, but I either do not have or am unable to locate that data.)
The data was collected by recording the sessions in the Plus halls, as called by both the Featured and the Local Top 10 callers. Volunteers then went through these tapes, call by call, counting the number of times each call was used. It was a time consuming, but rather fun, process!
I realize there are some valid objections to using this data for our present purposes:
We found the data only changed slightly from year-to-year. Sometimes the changes seemed to reflect a call growing or declining in popularity, while at other times the changes were because of a call being "featured" by a caller at some session.
I've applied the Frequency of Use data from these three years (combined) to all of the program lists that have been proposed for the GDP program. My hope is that this will give us awareness of which calls are most useful in producing an entertaining GDP program.
Including the more frequently used (more popular?) calls in the GDP, should aid in attracting existing club dancers to these dances. More dancers means more energy and excitement, which will keep the "GDP level" dancers coming back.
For comparison, the single most "popular" call (Promenade) was used 1134 times, representing 6.45% of total calls used.
The calls have been color coded as follows:
[gray] | Less than 0.01% | As a group: 6 times (0.03%) |
[blue] | Between 0.011% and 0.05% | As a group: 64 times (0.36%) |
[yellow] | Between 0.057% and 0.1% | As a group: 226 times (1.29%) |
[green] | Between 0.102% and 0.2% | As a group: 557 times (3.17%) |
Calls without any highlighting were either used more than 0.2% of the total calls, or there is no data available on these. The same "disclaimer" that Joe made with some of his compilations applies here: In some cases I had to make "best effort" guesses because of differences in the way calls were stated.
Callerlab Basic Part 1 Program | 23 calls |
Callerlab Basic Part 2 Program | 8 calls |
Callerlab Mainstream Program | 7 calls |
Bay Area Club Dance Program | 8 calls |
Experimental Condensed Program | 7 calls |
Osborne's Modified EC Program | 4 calls |
Rio Grande Valley Club Level | 23 calls |
NOTE: See the actual annotated list for the details. It was somewhat arbitrary which items I counted as one call or as multiple calls. Also, some of the low usage calls are almost certainly ones we would want to include on the GDP.
